Grade 2

March 4-8

Dear Grade Two Families,

Last week, we wore Pink Shirts in support of anti-bullying. To fully understand the impact of bullying, we read a book called The Invisible Boy. After listening to the story, the students were asked to scrunch up a paper cut-out of a person to represent the bullying that the invisible boy experienced. They were then given the task of trying to smooth out these wrinkles as much as possible. The class quickly realized that they couldn’t remove all the folds and creases on their paper and were able to understand the effects that hurtful words and behaviours could have on someone. It was heartwarming to hear the students talk about ways they could show kindness to their neighbours and not cause permanent wrinkles in others’ hearts.

This discussion also tied in nicely with our preparations for the sacrament of Reconciliation, which they will be receiving this week! In class, the children wrote about things they do that can injure their relationship with God. Once finished, they got to shred their paper! This not only helped them understand that their sins are private but also represented what God does with our sins when we tell Him we’re sorry. Thank you very much for your continued support and helping prepare your child for their First Confession! Please keep the class in your prayers as they get ready to experience the fullness of this sacrament on Thursday.

Additionally, we were blessed to have Archbishop Miller visit our school and spend time with the Grade Two’s on Friday! Not only did he ask the children questions about Reconciliation and the Eucharist, they also got to ask him questions about his important role in the church. We were honoured to welcome His Grace into our classroom!

Since the beginning of this Lenten season, the class has been given a daily promise to keep. This has ranged from saying a prayer for someone to giving something up for the day or doing an act of kindness. At the end of this week, the children will be taking their Lenten calendars home so that they can continue recording their acts of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving over Spring Break. During the break, your children can choose what they would like to do for each day and record it on their calendar by either drawing a cross for prayer, a fish for fasting, or a heart for almsgiving in the corresponding boxes. They should have all boxes filled out, up to Palm Sunday. Please return the sheet after the break so that they can continue to fill in the final week of Lent at school.
