Hello Gr 7 Families,
A few notes for next week.
As we are now in Lent, we are encouraging students to attend Mass every morning at 8:15am. Next week, the Grade 7’s are in charge of the readings and gifts at each of these morning Masses. If your child has a role (reading or gifts) please ensure they arrive to the church no later than 8:05am to be prepared.
A reminder that there are no assemblies during Lent.
Monday February 19th, in supporting our Humanities (Social Studies and Language Arts) curriculum focus of cultural perspectives through oral storytelling, Mr. Terry Point (Aboriginal Support Worker for the Richmond School District) will be returning (he presented to the students on the First Peoples game, Slahal earlier this school year) to share traditional Coast Salish stories and speak to the tradition of oral storytelling.
Wednesday February 21st, in supporting our Science curriculum focus of biodiversity of living things and place-based learning, the Richmond Nature Park will be coming to the school (to separate grades) to do a presentation on the Snow Goose lifecycle, diet, habitat, migration and the reason behind their presence in Richmond. The Grade 7 presentation will be 9:15-10:15am.
This week, as part of the annual Speech Arts competition, and in supporting the Language Arts curriculum focus of writing and communication, the students have been presenting their original persuasive speeches for the class. Eight students from Grade 7 will be selected to move forward to the semi-finals, which will take place next week at a time TBA. Parents are welcome to come watch these eight speeches. We are looking at next Thursday, February 22nd (after first recess) as the likely date. Four of these students will be selected to compete at the Speech Arts Finals (at St. Paul School), which will include students from Sacred Heart, St. Joseph the Worker, and St. Paul, will take place on March 6th.
The students have just been informed of the annual Knights of Columbus Essay competition. Criteria will be posted on Google Classroom. The essay will focus on the Archdiocesan theme of Care for Everyone in Our Common Home. Submission deadline to myself will be Tuesday April 24th so that they can be mailed off in time for the April 30th deadline.
A reminder to please send in the Ski Permission forms and cheque. We go to Whistler on Friday March 2nd.
A reminder to please send in the Confirmation registration package.
That’s all for now, enjoy your week!
Mr. Kirkham
