Hello Grade One Families!
On Friday, we had a dress down day for Black Excellence Day, which is observed on January 15, 2023. The aim of this day is to spark important conversations about anti-racism and unity among various ethnic groups, and highlight the past and present struggles of Black and racialized Canadians. In Grade 1, we learned about Viola Desmond. By refusing to change seats in a movie theater she directly challenged segregation in Canada. We can find Viola Desmond on the $10 bill, as she was an important Black woman in Canada to push back against racism.
