TRACK & FIELD INFORMATION

April 25, 2019

Dear Parents,

We are ready to begin another exciting season of Track and Field. The first set of outside of regular school time practices will begin this Monday April 29, 2019.. Track Meet days are listed below:

St. Paul’s/St. Joseph the Worker Dual Meet on Monday May 6, 2019 at Minoru Track in Richmond.

The Vancouver College Invitational will be held Thursday May 16, 2019 at Vancouver College.

CISVA Finals Track Meet – Wednesday, May 29 and Wednesday June 5 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.

Although many Track and Field events are individual events, we approach Track and Field in the same way as other extra-curricular activities as a team/group effort. The main goal of our program is to develop a sense of fair play, commitment, dedication, and responsibility in all children that choose to participate. It is imperative that students take their commitment seriously and attend all practices. We look forward to a high level of participation and enthusiasm as in past years.

This year, we would like to once again take advantage of the proximity of Minoru Track and incorporate the use of this excellent facility into our practice schedule. Morning practices begin at 7:30 am sharp. Practices will conclude at 8:15 am at which time students will leave the track for school with their parent. It is the responsibility of parents to arrange and coordinate transportation from the track to school at this time for their children. Morning track practices will be cancelled in the event of steady rain for safety considerations. Please use your best judgement in the event of inclement weather. Cancellations will be posted on the school website under the PE/Music Blog by 7:00am. We also ask that students eat lightly on mornings when we have practice, perhaps waiting until after practice to eat the majority of their breakfast. The nature of our Sprint practices is fairly intense and occasionally students have felt unwell if they have had a large breakfast prior to the exertion of practice.

Long Distance practices will also be held at Minoru Track. Long Distance practices are optional for all students in Gr. 3-7 and are for students interested in training for 400m, 800m, 1500m or Medley Relay teams (600m, 200m, 400m, 800m). We will depart from St. Paul’s @ 3:00 pm for after school practices and will gather as a group at the start finish line by approximately 3:15 pm. Pick-up will be @ 4:00 pm @ Minoru Track. Morning Long Distance practices will start at 7:30 am and conclude at 8:15 am so the students can get to school on time.

Discus practices will conclude at 3:45 pm. Pick up will be at St. Paul’s for Discus practices

The support and help we received from the parent community during last Track season was greatly appreciated and we do hope that many of you will be able to be involved with the children and staff at Track practices again this year.   Please indicate if you are able to assist us with a particular practice or event in the space provided on the consent form or contact Mr. Kelly @ gkelly@stpaulschool.ca

Please note that all students will participate in a 60m (gr. 3-5), 100m(gr. 3-7), 200m (gr. 6-7) and a 4 X 100m relay event (gr. 3-7) at the St. Paul’s/St. Joseph the Worker Dual Meet on Monday May 6, 2019 and are therefore strongly encouraged to attend all Sprint practices the week of April 29. All students will also participate in the Long Jump and Softball throw field events at this meet.

Thanks!

Mr. K
