Grade 1

Week of September 13 – 17

Hello Grade One Families!

The students did such a wonderful job of their first week of Grade One! So many “firsts” to navigate…lockers, buddies, Assembly, Mass, and changing for PE to name some of the highlights. No wonder everyone was tired on Friday! Some were even too tired to eat their lunch! After having spent a few days with your children, I am even more excited about this school year and the learning adventures that we will have together!

September

I consider September to be the “foundation” month of Grade One. Jesus told a parable about building one’s house on rock rather than on sand. Of course, He was speaking of faith and rooting oneself in love for God. I take this parable as inspiration for the beginning of the school year. Remembering that Jesus is always with us is a strong foundation upon which to begin the faith development that I pray will happen for all of us during this school year. Because our school theme for the year is “One Family One Hope in Christ”, we will be learning about Baptism this month. This beautiful sacrament welcomes us into the family of God and joins us together in faith.

While the faith component is the most important part of our foundation, there are expectations and routines that will lay the groundwork for our Grade One year. This month there will be opportunities to discuss and learn about having a growth mindset, being flexible, using calming strategies, working well in various classroom situations, and being a considerate classmate and friend. We will also practice various skills that will be needed for small group work when we have learning and practice stations.  Wrapped around all of this is having fun with classmates, being a good listener, using working time effectively, and exploring many hands on ways of learning, exploring, sharing and cooperating. We will try to update the ClassDojo often so that you can see what we are up to this month. The login information will be coming home this week.

Birthday Photos

Please send in a photo of your child for our birthday board. Please print your child’s name, Grade, and birthdate on the back of the photo.

Masks

If you would like your child to wear their mask to PE class, they will need to have a separate mask that is not attached to a string/lanyard. This is for safety reasons. An alternative would be to teach your child how to take the string off and put it back on after PE class.
