  •   Every second Thursday, Father Kim visits our classroom (he comes all year)
  • As part of the SOCIAL STUDIES curriculum, several professionals have been invited to speak to the students about their job
  • Last Thursday, our school Nurse (Richmond Public Health) came and helped the students with their hand washing routine, and spoke about good hygiene when they are coughing, sneezing or have a cold, and she answered many questions about her work
  •  Coming up this month are visits from: the RCMP, the Richmond Fire Department and Sierra Waste Management

 Tuesday, February 14 VALENTINE’S DAY

  • Dress down day; your children may wear red or pink or white play clothes 
  • If you send Valentine’s Day CARDS for the class, please ONLY sign the card with your child’s name, please DO NOT address the cards
  • We will ensure the cards are all distributed (you can imagine the challenge if we have to sort 31 X 31 cards by recipient name!!)

Wednesday, February 15 HUNDREDs DAY

  • This is a very special day in the Primary classrooms
  • In Kindergarten, we will celebrate in the class with some fun activities to acknowledge that we have been in school for 100 days
  • As a part of the celebration we ask that each family work with their Kindergarten child to make a collection of 100 items that their child can bring to school and we can display; work on sorting and counting your project WITH your Kindergarten child
  • Some examples:  100 cheerios on a string to make a necklace; 100 fingerprints; 100 stickers; 100 drawings such as a happy face; 100 pennies in a jar…the choices are endless.  You can display your items on a poster board or whatever creative manner you wish
  • The 100 items DO NOT have to be the same
  • Your child should be able to explain to his/her classmates how the 100 items were sorted, counted and displayed
  • The project should not create an expense for you

LENT – DAILY MASS

  • As part of our observance of Lent, Monseigneur Luterbach encourages ALL of us to attend DAILY MASS
  • During Lent Morning Mass will begin at 8:15; the First Reading, Responsorial Psalm and Prayers of the Faithful will be proclaimed by Grades 3-7

MATH

  • We will finish showing and recognizing the quantity 2, 3, 4 and 5 in several ways
  • We will begin, Exploring Geometry and Measurement

SCIENCE

  • We will finish Weather with a focus on the Seasons
  • We will begin Reduce-Reuse-Recycle: Being good Stewards of our resouces

LANGUAGE ARTS

  • We continue to have a weekly focus on one alphabet letter and the reading/decoding practice in our Small Groups
  • Please, continue to read and reread the Read Well booklets and table work that your child brings home

 SNOW

  • The students all thoroughly enjoyed the snow during recess, especially trying to make snow angels and sliding down the cold slide. 
  • We hope that you also enjoyed the snow as a family.
  • The Vancouver winter rains have arrived.
  • A reminder:  we go outside during recess whenever possible, so please continue to ensure your child has a warm coat, gloves and a head cover.

FEAST OF ST. PAUL MASS

  • Wednesday, January 25 @11:00
  • Immediately following the Mass the parents/families are asked to go directly to the Parish Centre/Gym and take their seats at the family tables.
  • The students will FIRST return to the classroom.  We will proceed to the Parish Centre/Gym as a class.
  • If your family is there, the students will be directed to join his/her family.
  • The remaining students will eat their lunch at the Kindergarten table with the Kindergarten teachers.
  • DISMISSAL is immediately following lunch @1:00.

 SNOW......what if we close the school?

  • please refer to the home page of the school web site regarding school closure
  • please listen to CKNW, CISL or CBC in the morning for announcements of school closures
  • in the morning, you will only receive a phone call from Mrs. Uy if the school will be closed, otherwise, assume we will be open

SNOW  and RECESS

  • yes, we do go outside for recess when it snows
  • please ensure that your child is wearing boots, otherwise he/she will not be allowed on the field or the play area and will have to remain on the sidewalk
  • a head cover and gloves and a warm jacket should be part of his/her clothing all winter

  • This week the letter we focus on is Ii says /i/ insect in the ink
  • Up to now we have focused on the upper case I to reinforce the daily name printing on the tablework:  I'm _______
  • We have used I to start sentences:  I see ______
  • Now, the students will say long I for I standing alone and i (ink) for any lower case letter i

NEW -- SHOW and TELL

  • a notice came home on Friday, January 6 with this information and a list of students for each group; if you did not get this information, please let us know

Rules for Show and Tell

  1. Students must be able to carry the item themselves
  2. Student should be able to share 3 comments about the item -- for example: "What is it?, Where did it come from? Why is it special?"
  3. Student does not have to bring anything but should be prepared to share a special event or activity
  4. If the student is absent that day, they miss their turn
  5. The time will be a maximum of 2 minutes per student

RELIGION

  • we continue with daily prayer;  the students continue to offer a variety of sincere prayers of "please" or "thank you" that are meaningful to them
  • review of the Christmas Story / Epiphany 
  • continue to discuss their stewardship of the Earth and all its contents:  I care____
  • next week we will begin to discuss the life of St. Paul, leading up to the celebration of Mass on January 25, Feast Day of St. Paul

 ALPHABET

  • We continue featuring one letter of the alphabet per week.  This week it is D says /d/, dog in the dog house.

A NEW START

  • Every 2 weeks we rearrange the table seating.  Ask your child at the end of Tuesday if they are at Table 1, 2, 3 or 4?
  • The names for the reading groups have changed.  Gone are the Zebras, Giraffes, Dragonflies .... Ask your child at the end of Tuesday about their new group name.

  • Please take note of the information previously posted about the Christmas concert.
  • for the evening performance, 'Sunday Best' means your child should dress up in special, fancy clothes suitable for a party

Christmas Concert Information

Please do not send your Kindergarten child to school in the morning on Tuesday, December 13, 2011.

  • We anticipate that the Kindergarten students will be too exhausted for the evening performance if they attend school all day.

Kindergarten schedule for Tuesday, December 13:

  • eat lunch at home
  • 12:30 arrival in class, wear regular uniform
  • 1:30 Christmas concert in gym/parish centre
  • 3:00 Regular dismissal from Kindergarten portable
  • 6:30 arrival in class, dressed in “Sunday best” for evening performance
  • 7:00 Christmas concert in gym/parish centre
  • 8:00 (or thereabout) dismissal from Kindergarten portable

 

  • Family and friends are welcome at either performance.
  • There is no admission charge
  • There are no reserved seats, other than for the Priests and Sisters, unless you are there yourself.
  • Please, be considerate of others when taking photos or videotaping
  • The Primary Choir will be seated on risers to the left below the stage and the Intermediate choir will be seated on the right side below the stage
  • The Kindergarten students will be seated on the floor in front of the stage.
  • Please come to the classroom to pick up your child.  Dismissal will be to an ADULT at the door the same as our daily routine.

  • It was a pleasure to speak with you on Friday about your child.  We sincerely enjoy teaching your children. 
  • We appreciate the discussion we had about your child’s progress and how we, as a team, may help him/her be successful in Kindergarten.

Report Cards

  • The First Term Report Cards will be coming home on Thursday, December 1. 
  • You may keep the brown envelope and the white insert with the comments and assessment for Term 1. 
  • Please, sign the back of the blue folder and return the blue folder to the class
  • The comments and check marks in the report card indicate your child’s progress in the first 3 months of school and should reflect our discussion at the Parent / Teacher meeting. 
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please phone or email us to set up an appointment.


Christmas Concert Tuesday, December 13

  • The tradition at St. Paul is to have an afternoon and an evening concert. 
  • The afternoon concert is ideal for younger siblings and elderly family members to attend.  Both concerts are open to ALL friends and family.  Further details will be coming in December. 
  • Kindergarten is singing a song, “Mary Said, Yes”.  We will send home the words so you may be familiar with them.  The Kindergarten students will practice in class and during Music with Mr. Kelly.

  • Thank you for all the donations to the Home Centre and the Treasure Box.  The students are enjoying both the imaginative play and creating something special.

 PARENT - TEACHER CONFERENCE Friday, November 25

You may wait in the south foyer of the school or outside under the covered area for your appointment time.

We will post a list of the children's names on the Kindergarten door.

      For example:         9:30   Joe Smith

                                            Lucy Brown

  • This means that the parents of Joe Smith would come into the Kindergarten classroom at 9:30 and the parents of Lucy Brown would come in at 9:45.
  • If it is your time, please knock and walk into the Kindergarten classroom.
  • If there is a need for further discussion we will set up another appointment for a later date.

Please, mark your calendars for the NEXT conference, which is a STUDENT - LED  Conference.  

  • Friday, April 13, from 8:00am to 5:00pm.  
  • For this conference you and your child will come to the Kindergarten classroom, and he/she will show you the classroom routine and showcase his/her work.

There are over 170 families inour school and we do our VERY best to accommodate you onthe posted Conference Day.

We wish each of our families --- a wonderful, safe and happy long weekend.

We remember in our prayers all the Souls gone before us and we offer a prayer of Thanksgiving for all their sacrifices.

HOT LUNCH  Monday, November 14

  • we will wrap-up and send home whatever your child has not finished eating so that you may better guage the lunch portions

SCIENTIST VISIT  Monday, November 14

  • we will have a Science workshop in class in the morning.
  • "Get Buggy"  will look at a variety of 'bugs'... students will be meeting a variety of insects in our Reading activities in the next few weeks and this Science will tie in nicely
  • soon you will be hearing from your child that a spider has 2 body parts and 8 legs
  • however, an insect has 3 body parts and 6 legs
  • in a few weeks, we will even be able to see and hold earthworms from our classroom aquarium

FEAST of CHRIST the KING

  • November 20 is the end of Cycle A in our Church year. 
  • The response changes for the celebration of the Mass will begin the First Sunday of Advent, November 27
  • Last week, if you DID NOT receive the booklet outlining the changes and a brief explanation of the changes, please let us know and we will send home a copy for you 

HEALTH DEPARTMENT VISIT  Wednesday, November 16

  • a blue information flyer came home today from the Richmond Health Unit advising you that your child will be part of the Kindergarten Screening for vision and hearing
  • please let us know if you did not receive this information
  • if you DO NOT want your child screened, please let us know

coming soon -- parent teacher Conference Day

  • Friday, November 25  8:00 - 5:30
  • For Kindergarten this is a 10-15 minute meeting between the teachers and the parents ONLY
  • Kindergarten students do not come to school that day
  • there will be supervision of school age siblings (no preschoolers) in the Library; your Kindergarten child may wait in the Library while we meet
  • if you have older siblings, Grades 1-7, that meeting will be with you, your child and his/her teacher in the respective classroom(s)
