MATH PROBLEM SOLVING

1)  When solving problems, the students are asked to estmate their answers first. We have learned 3 strategies to complete this task: Benchmarks, Front End Estimating, and Compatible Numbers. Students should choose one strategy and consistently use it to estimate the numbers within the problem. To review the definitions, use this Math Glossary and click on Grades 4-6: http://www.ronblond.com/MathGlossary/

2) The next math lesson is on multiples and students can use this game to practice (#32 Multiple Sort): http://jmathpage.com/JIMSNumberoperationsfunctions.html

Keep on practicing those times table to x15!

3) Photos are due Tuesday, October 25.

New Subjects

1) In Language Arts we are focusing on paragraphs writing paragraphs with good sentence fluency. A paragraph on Soccer is due for Monday. There is a checklist of the criteria expected for sentence fluency in the student's draft book.  I recommend that the students read the paragraphs they write out loud to hear if the sentences demonstrate powerful writing that has sentence fluency.

2) In Math we have started a unit on Understanding Number. Students are working read and writing numbers from 1 to 1,000,000,000,000. (Yes, that's one trillion). A fun game which will help review place values is   http://www.math-play.com/Place-Value-Millionaire/place-value-millionaire.html
