Grade 5's blog

October 23rd-27th

 Good Evening Grade 5 Families!

What a much better looking day today than we've had the past few. While you were all probably bundled up at home avoiding the rain, myself and the rest of our staff were in Vancouver reflecting on our practice, learning new things and, if you were like me, furiously writing things down to bring back to our classroom.

Here is our Week at a Glance:

Other:

-Reminder that Halloween is a Dress Down day and students are invited to wear their costumes or black and orange clothing.

-Special note: I no longer ask that parents sign their child's agenda each night. I will continue to do so at school to ensure homework is being recorded. Of course, I encourage you to check over but no need to continue with the signatures as I will not look at their agendas the next morning unless there is a note from home inside.

If you have any questions, concerns or comments please feel free to email me!

See you on Friday!

Ms. Haughian

Best,

September 25-29

 Good morning!

Thank you to all those that came to Meet the Teacher Night on Tuesday. It was so great meeting you all!

Here is our week at a glance.

Monday:

-French & Digital Literacy (remember to return all library books)

-Today is the first of 10 DARE sessions: for those of you who have had older children pass through Grade 5 at St. Paul's, you'll remember DARE is a program ran by the local RCMP to prepare students for challenges and decision making opportunities later on in their lives. It teaches them the dangers of drugs and alcohol and the importance of saying "No," forming strong friendships and standing up for what you believe in. It will be run completely by the RCMP officer and will take place every Monday from 2:15-3:00

Tuesday:

-PE

-VC prayer presentation

Wednesday:

-PE

-Kindness Rocks Presentations in various classrooms

-2:00 dismissal

Thursday:

Friday:

-Walkathon: remember to wear comfortable clothing and dress for the weather (no umbrellas please and bring a pocket snack for the walk)

-Dismissal at 1:00,  parents may take their students home as soon as we return from the walk

Other Things:

-Google Classroom is up and running and seems to be a great medium for students both at school and at home. Parents, if you would like to receive updates about due dates please let me know and I will input your email into the "invite guardian" tab under your child's account. Otherwise, you can access your child's account directly by signing into their google classroom (their email and password is written into their agendas).

-I ask that students bring in a family photo (either printed out or an actual print) for our family tree (connected to our Language Arts unit). Please note they will be returned to you however, I will be stapling them up on the bulletin board so printed out or photocopied versions are fine!

-Meet the Teacher overview is attached to this post!

-Remember to check the PE blog for all those practice and game times!

If you have questions or concerns send me an email or write a note in the agenda :)

Best,
Ms. H

Wednesday Reminders

 Good afternoon everyone!

We had a bit of a chaotic afternoon organizing our classroom supplies and hearing all about the exciting extra curriculars available to Grade 5's this year! Therefore, we ran out of time to properly write in our agendas so I told the students I would write a blog post reminding them of everything going on.

To Bring Back to School:

-Volleyball permission form (the pink paper), the schedule is yours to keep!

-Cross country permission form (white paper), again schedule is yours to keep

-Birthday pictures with full name, grade and birthdate on the back

-The forms in the envelope need to be filled out and brought back to school in the same envelope please!

Please have all forms returned by Friday if at all possible!

Reminders:

-PE tomorrow, please wear gym strips under uniforms

-Friday walkathon and Grade 7 leadership assembly

Day 2 of Grade 5 was a great success!

Any questions or concerns please feel free to send me an email!

Enjoy your evenings,

Ms. Haughian

First Week of School!

 Dear Families of Grade 5,

I had such a great day meeting the students of Grade 5. I couldn't help but compliment them on their ability to work cooperatively on a problem solving task. They made marshmallow castles and worked with their group to create the tallest one. Our winning group created a structure that was 35 cm high. It was a great accomplishment considering the sticky materials we had to work with. We finished off our morning together with a read aloud of What Matters, a picture book that pairs very well with our theme for this year, Care for Everyone in our Common Home. We discussed what this looks like in our community and related it to our book. Each student was then given a small card to write something that matters to them which will be displayed on one of the bulletin boards in the classroom.

Our week at a glance:

Other notes:

-our regular PE days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday

-I ask that agendas are signed by a parent each night (today is the exception) to ensure good communication between school and home

-please locate a fairly recent picture for our birthday board!

If at any time this year you need to contact me please don’t hesitate to do so. I can be emailed at mhaughian@stpaulschool.ca or feel free to write a note in your child’s agenda. Appointments to meet can be arranged!

Looking forward to this year,
