Grade 2's blog

WEEK OF OCTOBER 23 - OCTOBER 27

Hi Grade Two Families,

I hope you had a wonderful long weekend! The staff spent their Friday and Saturday at the Vancouver Convention Centre attending a conference with tons of other teachers! It was a great two days of learning. I listened to fantastic speakers who shared about provocations and inquiry and what that might look like in the classroom. I also attended powerful sessions on self-regulation and how to integrate First Peoples' Principals of Learning. There were many takeaways and lots of neat things I can't wait for us to do together!

Please don't forget to sign up for a conference time. Thank you to all the families who have done so already! I'm looking forward to seeing all of you on Friday!

WEEK OF OCTOBER 16 - 20

Hi Grade Two Families!

Thank you to all the families that have signed up for Class Dojo! Just a few more families need to sign up, and then I can begin sharing! This will be the way I will communicate photos and videos of what happens at school. The invitations and instructions on how to sign up were sent home last week. If you did not receive it, please let me know so I can invite you again. Class Dojo does feature a point system for students, however we will not be using it. This is because we already have a positive reinforcement point system in class. If you have any questions regarding Class Dojo, please let me know.

The students are working on a mini-project to design a parachute for a little toy. They are having fun exploring different ideas and coming up with a design that will make the slowest parachute possible. This week we will have a chance to put those designs to work and start building. I'll be posting photos and updates on Class Dojo. Stay tuned!

Please bring any toilet paper or paper towel rolls to school for our next project.

CARD GAME FRIDAY - ROLLING STONE

 Hello Grade 2 Families!

Last Friday we played Rolling Stone. It was a brand new game for all of us! It got us really thinking about the suits on the cards and what kind of shapes are on it.

Happy playing! :)

OCTOBER 2 - OCTOBER 6

Hi Grade Two Families,

Just like that it's already October! It's quite hard to believe! A big, big thank you to all those who volunteered at this year's Walkathon! It's always one of the most exiciting days of the year, and it wouldn't be possible without your support. We even made it in before it started to pour! Two highlights from this week were reading the book Actual Size and having some Vancouver College students come and teach us about our Archdiocesan theme. In the book Actual Size, we saw the real size of certain animal parts. A squid's eye is bigger than our faces! We measured and compared these different parts afterwards. Stay tuned for some photos! The Vancouver College came and talked about the different fruits and vegetables grown locally in our birthday months. There was a lot of great drawing and laughing happening. I'm sure there'll be mroe of that to come in the year!

Hello Parents,

Your child brought home his/her first home reading assignment today.

Here are just a few reminders for you:

  • Your child will bring home a reading booklet and communication booklet in the yellow folder
  • Please read for 15-20 minutes and record the time your child has read
  • If your child finishes the book before 15-20 minutes, they can read it again or pick a different book.
  • Please help your child read with fluency and expression, and make sure that they are pausing after each sentence.
  • If they struggle through a word, let them try to sound it out first. If they are stuck, please help them.
  • Have your child bring the book to school the next day even if the reading is not completed.
  • Students are not allowed to take out a new book if they have not returned the previous ones.
