Grade 2's blog

WEEK OF DECEMBER 11 - DECEMBER 15

Dear Grade Two Families,

The are two weeks left in the school year and you can already feel the excitement for Jesus' coming. As Advent has begun, you can find the Advent wreath, our Advent calendar and several different Nativity scenes around the room. We were even visted by our own elf! The class has affectionately named him James. We find James doing silly things around the room, but he never forgets to drop off a little note on our Christmas tree. The notes are Christmas Story Bible verses and the prophecies that foretold Jesus' coming. The class did a great job preparing their hearts for Jesus, and in return earning over 15 cans of soup to donate to the Christmas hamper. We will be dropping off these cans on Monday morning. We'll see if we can match that - or even top it - this week as we'll be donating pasta and pasta sauce.

On Friday, we had Card Game Friday with our buddies. They learned different new games from them, taught them their favourite ones and built card towers together. The students who found card towers the hardest at the beginning are becoming experts at it now! They have really shown grit.

We are going on a field trip this Friday to SilverCity Riverport to watch the movie, The Star. Please refer to the email sent this moring about specific details. Please submit the form by Tuesday, December 12. A big thank you to the parents who already volunteered to drive!

WEEK OF DECEMBER 4 - DECEMBER 8

Hi Grade 2 Families,

Happy Advent!

It is hard to believe that it is already December! We have spent the last three months together getting to know one another, learning and exploring new things through playing, and finding out how we can be closer to Jesus. This will definitely continue during this eason of Advent. We know that this season is a time of waiting, and we'll continue to explore what we can do during this time to prepare our hearts for Jesus, and some special people who helped make Christmas possible. The class made Advent calendar was sent via email over the weekend, and I hope that it helps you and your family grow closer to Jesus during this Advent season.

During the Advent season, our virtue to connect us to the school theme of Caring for Everyone in Our Common Home is generosity. The Grade 2's will be working hard to help donate food items to families in need during this Christmas time. They will do that be making good choices, meeting their own goals and trying their best. Our in-class reward system will determine how much the class will donate. We pulled three tags from the Christmas tree in the church for pasta sauce and pasta, instant noodles and canned meat.  I have no doubt it will be lots! If you are interested in providing donations for some of these items, please let me know.

CARD GAME FRIDAY - SLAPJACK

 Hi Grade Two Families,

We played the much anticipated game of Slapjack last Friday! Not to worry, all players were gentle with their slaps.

Happy playing!

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 27 - DECEMBER 1

Hi Grade Two Families!

All week long we have been talking about Thomas, the school's sponsor child gearing up for the dress down day on Friday. We read about his family, where he lives, where he goes to school, and then we asked a lot of really good questions about him and what it means to be poor. We also talked about ways we can help the poor and how we can serve them. We decided as a class we can pray for them and donate money to them. To add to the $2 each child brought it, each pompom the class earned, as part of our positive reinforcement, counted as an extra dollar to give to Thomas. They worked really hard by waiting patiently, playing cooperatively, helping each other out and finishing their work on time. They knew that they weren't just earning the pompoms for themselves, but for someone else. By Friday, the class had earned 42 pompoms which gave them $42! They were very excited to find out that they raised a total of $104 for Thomas. We'll be continuing the giving spirit as we'll be focusing on generosity throughout December and the Advent season.

Our journey with grit continued this week as the children were challenged with building a marble run using the toilet paper rolls. You may have seen some of them come home. They needed to take what they know about force and motion to make the marble go down as slowly as possible. It took some toilet paper rolls, a lot of tape, and definitely some grit. Even though it was difficult at first, the class really pulled through and tried their best. Till the next challenge!

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 20-24

Hi Grade Two Families!

I believe my draft of this week's blog was accidentally published, so I apologize for any confusion it may have caused. Although I'm sure we would all love another long weekend :) Thank you for being understanding as I'm pretty sure this won't be the last time technology and I do a little song and dance.

For Card Game Friday, we built card towers... or at least we tried to! We looked at different pictures of card towers and watched some experts build some amazing sculptures. We were all feeling inspired but it turns out building card towers is hard! A handful of the class was successful, but for majority, we learned we're going to need a lot more practice. Instead of feeling down, we focused on the power of YET and uncovering GRIT. So while most of us have yet to build a card tower, we learned some things take time and we need to keep trying!

Thank you for sending in the toy cars! We played with different materials to make the fastest and slowest ramp for our cars. In doing so, we learned about friction! We learned we definitely need friction otherwise we'd be sliding all over the place. Look for pictures soon via Class Dojo.

Mrs. Moorehead sent an email about changes to parking in the back area. If your child can indepedently exit and enter the car, while the driver remains in their seat, please use the pick-up/ drop-off lane in the front of the school. It will lessen the cars at the back of the school and make it easier for those who need extra assistance. Thank you very much for your continued support on this. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

We had quite the exciting week at the school! We started the week with Halloween. We dressed up in costumes, played Halloween games, and definitely ate some treats. The students had wonderful questions and continued the conversation with Father Mark on Thursday. Friday started out with the Walkathon Assembly. We raised a total of $63,802.40! Thank you very much for all your support with the Walkathon. We capped off the week with a staff vs. Grade 7 students volleyball game.
